LIttle Hiccup

A rare meal out in Port Fairy - as they say in Oz, 'it was yum'.
So we had a little hiccup in our journey yesterday - our camper van broke down! After only 10 days in the camper we managed to break the thing. We had noticed a funny knocking sound a few days back - quite quiet at first as we drove but it gradually got louder until it was clear that something was amiss. A call to Britz later (OK, quite a few calls but we had excellent customer service) and the final solution was to simply send us a new van. For the mechanically minded, it was a problem with the cam shaft and we couldn't drive it any further. Thank goodness that was the final solution as we didn't fancy hanging around for an unknown number of days waiting for the van to be fixed (and in Warrnambool as well, about 20km along the coast, which was not alluring).
The good news is that we got a newer van in exchange (upgrade!), and we are already in it and ready to continue our journey. I estimate it just cost us one extra night in Port Fairy, which was no hardship. Port Fairy is a historic fishing town on the Great Ocean Road with lovely tree-lined wide boulevards, old stone cottages and a very interesting nature reserve on the point called Griffith Island. Yesterday we had a great nature walk out to the lighthouse - and saw black wallabies! - and this morning the girls and I took a walk down to the Saturday market and checked out a fabulous bookstore/art space. Port Fairy hosts a big Folk music festival every March and it seems to have injected a funky, alternative vibe to the town.
Tomorrow it's off to Portland in the new van - let's hope it lasts longer than 10 days this time - we've still got 3 months and 20 days to go...
