To swim with the sea lions we went with a small company called Baird
Bay Eco Tours and they had a limit of 14 on the boat so it was nice and small.
The day was perfect as well – sunny and warm. In fact, almost too warm because
the sea lions were more happy sunning themselves on the rocks rather than
playing in the water with us, but we soon tempted a few of them in – especially
the young ones. They were so playful and interactive – it was like playing with
lively and affectionate puppies underwater.
We tried the pod of dolphins first who are
regulars in the bay and while they were mildly interested and we did get in the
water with them, they rather quickly swam away. At the end of the tour we did
see a mother dolphin and her newborn calf swimming right beside the boat, which
was very special. Alan, the skipper, suspected the newborn calf was the reason
the rest of the dolphins were perhaps less interactive that day.
I think Toby’s video of the swim with the sea lions says it best – it was a magical experience!
Baird Bay - not a lot there! Except, of course, a lot of sea lions and dolphins |
